The Joyful Learner

The Joyful guide

God created children as joyful learners. Traditional schooling erodes that joyfulness by pressure, competition, rote learning, and a lack of wonder and discovery.

The joyful learner needs a joyful teacher, a joyful guide to enter the wonder of God’s creation. Training joyful guides is the ministry of ICMI where these new teachers learn to look at the child as Jesus sees him while they begin this transformation of learning. It is a rigorous, but joyful journey, discovering along with the child the wonder and majesty of God’s creation.

No longer looking at math, language, or science as subjects to be taught and mastered but as doorways to endless wonder and the beginning of serving God, both for the child and the guide, with all of their heart, mind, soul, and strength.

The Heart of Montessori

Dr. Montessori wrote to Cardinal Pompili, in 1917:

"Each of us is called to serve God within the limits that God has ordained, and in the form He has willed; and my service is the offering of my work. I believe that this method of education is the instrument God placed in my hands-for this ends".

Dr. Montessori also wrote, in "The Child in the Church."

"The teacher must be able to see the child as Jesus saw him."

Only Montessori

Montessori is the only educational system that starts from a theological foundation – God’s respect for the child. “Unless you become like a child you can’t enter the kingdom of God.”

Montessori is the only educational system that starts from the senses instead of the intellect, developing the senses as an aid to intellectual development. Aristotle said, “There is nothing in the mind that was not first in the hand.”

Montessori is the only educational system that is built on a unified, coherent set of principles that springs from observing the nature of the child.

Montessori is the only educational system where observation of the child is the essential skill for teaching the child.

Montessori is the only educational system where the physical classroom/environment is an integral component of the teaching process.

Montessori is the only educational system that is built on the power of choice and how that power is developed and refined.

Montessori is the only system of education that celebrates movement.

Montessori is the only system built on wonder and discovery instead of rote learning.

Montessori is the only system that functions because of “grace and courtesy” – good manners, consideration for others and cooperation.

Montessori is not a system of teaching, it is a system of learning.

What People Are Saying:

Amy Galarowicz

Vine Montessori | NJ

"After years of occasionally just enjoying the emails, becoming a member of ICMI brought me into the family. Struggling through my first few years as a Montessori guide, it was unsettling to realize I was advancing spiritual values I knew to be non-Biblical.

Then I joined ICMI and jumped into the Elementary course. With the help of my ICMI family members, the scales have fallen from my eyes; I now see the real beauty of Montessori’s method and how in its fullest expression, everything in the curriculum points to God. Simply astounding! Finding my way to actually joining ICMI took me 13 years but has felt like coming home in so many ways. Thank you, Lord for this amazing group of dedicated, missional professionals."

What am I going to learn today?
The challenge of Montessori is not what the child will learn but what the adult, the guide, will learn.  Humility is a key word in Dr. Montessori’s vocabulary...

The transcendent in Grace and Courtesy

When we explore the transcendent in Montessori, we are acknowledging the God-breathed inspiration of the work of our hands. "For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways," declares the Lord.  The daily miracle of the child forming themselves and becoming who God has called him/her to be…

"Fascination and wonder are two things in short supply in traditional education. We need to be careful that we make room and time for wonder in our Montessori journey. Am I still the child that is fascinated by everything?.”
